HELP US ESTABLISH A BLACK COMMUNITY CENTRE…

We need your help.

The problem….

Decades of municipal, provincial and federal cutbacks have left few resources for recreation programming with little or no space for youth to participate in structured, physical activities.  Consequently, there has been a rise in childhood obesity, youth crime, and educational failure.

Because they have few constructive avenues to channel their energy, youth hang out on street corners, which leads to increased police presence in their neighbourhoods, more arrests and fewer chances of gaining meaningful employment (as a result of having a criminal record).

The plan…

The neighbourhood basketball association (nba) was created to improve the life outcomes for at-risk, criminalized, Black youth by providing free or low-cost educational, recreational and social development opportunities.

Using basketball as an outreach and engagement tool, our objective is to help at-risk youth, particularly Black youth, increase their chances of leading successful lives by preventing academic failure and/or initial or repeated contact with the criminal justice system.

To that end, we have launched a campaign to raise $10 million dollars to open the Toronto Black Community Centre (TBCC).

The centre will serve as the nba headquarters and will be a Black youth-friendly environment that will provide:

  1. knowledge of Self / Black-focused education;
  2. programs to earn a high school diploma (GED);
  3. affordable community meeting/event space,
  4. effective parenting, childcare instruction
  5. culturally-sensitive, affordable childcare services
  6. recreational programming.
  7. employment / job search assistance;
  8. small business training / mentorship;
  9. personal / family counseling; and
  10. pardon processing assistance
